Sometime, you just need a brownie!
I have tried so many different “healthier or lower calorie” brownie recipes with the anticipation of enjoying a gooey decadent chocolate dessert, only to be disappointed by a rubber-like texture or to be an overly cake-like brownie wanna-be. So, I decided to take my original recipe for Triple Chocolate Brownies (11 points per brownie) and rework it until I achieved a brownie that checked all the boxes for me. This is not as easy as I thought it would be. Turns out, all the ingredients that make brownies so delicious are high in calories and points. I tried replacing butter with banana, avocado and applesauce, and while some of these swaps produced a tasty baked good, it was not the texture that I was in search of.
So, back to the drawing board, until finally I hit gold. The downside is that these Double Chocolate Brownies are so good, I have difficulty stopping with just one. Thankfully they freeze nicely, so when I have a craving, I can defrost one or two from the freezer to splurge on this delicious sweet treat. This is definitely a brownie your whole family will enjoy.
GLUTEN-FREE OPTION IS DELICIOUS!
In my quest to make the perfect brownie, I experimented with different flours. While this recipe is delicious with all-purpose flour, I am particularly fond of it made with Oat Flour. This makes it the perfect dessert to make for a friend or family member who is gluten intolerant or allergic to wheat products.
Quick and Easy
One of the things I especially love about this recipe is that it is a one bowl recipe. Start with a bowl over a pan of simmering water to melt the butter and chocolate. The remaining ingredients will come together in the same bowl. In less than ten minutes, your brownies will be baking in the oven.

- Method: Oven Baked
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 4 Ounces Bittersweet Chocolate, chopped
- 4 ounces Semisweet Chocolate, pieces divided in half.
- 1/2 cup Butter, cut into pieces
- 1/4 cup Unsweetened Applesauce
- 1 cup Granulated Sugar
- 2 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder (Dutch Processed)
- 4 Large Eggs
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher Salt
- 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour or Oat Flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven at 350 degrees. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with Bak Kleen ZT.
- In a metal bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water, melt the bittersweet chocolate, 2 ounces of semisweet chocolate and butter. Stir occasionally until mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and let cool for about 5 minutes.
- Mix in the cocoa powder.
- Stir in the sugar and the vanilla and whisk until the sugar is incorporated.
- Add the applesauce and mix to combine.
- Whisk in the eggs one at a time, stirring well after each addition.
- Stir in the salt and the flour, stirring just until the mixture is combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
- Sprinkle the remaining semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the batter.
- Bake the mixture in the middle of the oven for 13-16 minutes. A cake tester inserted into the center will come out with some crumbs adhering to it. If you jiggle the pan, the center should not wiggle, and the sides will start to pull away from the pan.
- Remove from oven and let cool in the pan, set on a cooling rack for ten minutes.
- Invert onto a sheet of parchment paper. (The parchment will keep the soft chocolate chips from sticking to your board or rack. Once completely cooled, invert onto a cutting board and cut into 2 x 2 inch squares, 24 equal pieces.
- Serve and Enjoy
